A Page from the Diary
With the new single "Love Shaped Hole" looming I present to you a page from Cam's diary. This is actually two separate poems that I grabbed from his diary and combined into one song. The chorus is a poem titled "Alive Like You," and the last 3 quatrains (and I use that term loosely since there are 5 lines not 4) is titled "Prison Skin." You can read both of them on his blog. I actually wrote the first quatrain in the lyrics to flesh out the song. There is a bit of idolatry in the chorus, and it seems to be religious in nature. However, in the verse (the poem "Prison Skin") Cam is speaking of putting a different face forward and trapping yourself within that skin. I really liked the idea of this, so I ran with it. He writes of masks and protection and self imprisonment which to me says that he has put this guise up in order to protect a fragile ego. When I combined the poem "Alive Like You," with "Prison Skin" I was taking this ideal a step further. Here the character puts this psuedo-self forward to hide the timid fragile ego and ends up being consumed by this personality. The true self becomes dangerously obsessed with this new skin and desires to become this person. Essentially this is a story about inner personal struggle of one's self awareness. Did I get too philisophical on you?
